Invented in 1918 and published in 1953, John Francis Byrne's "Chaocipher" cryptographic system eluded the best amateur cryptanalysts for almost 60 years. When it was finally revealed, it surprised the cryptanalytic world for its originality. My presentation will present the complete history of this fascinating saga, the colorful characters involved in the story, how the presenter succeeded in uncovering the cipher system, how the cipher system works, and the current state of Chaocipher research. The presentation will also include important and practical lessons learned from the effort to solve Chaocipher, lessons applicable to all cryptanalytic endeavors.
