Presentation:

The Zschweigert Cryptograph

Speaker(s):
Date & time (UTC/GMT):
March 20, 2021 5:00 PM
Description:

The Zschweigert Cryptograph is one of the many cipher machine designs developed in the years following the First World War (1914-1918). It was invented by the German textile engineer Rudolf Zschweigert, who had earlier designed some programmable stitching machines. Unlike most other crypto devices of the time, the Zschweigert Cryptograph implements a transposition cipher, rather than a substitution cipher. The device was probably never used in practice. In this presentation, Klaus will explain the Zschweigert Cryptograph and its background. In the second part, Jerry will introduce his Zschweigert Cryptograph software simulator which he designed based on the details which he had earlier received from Klaus. It is hoped that this software will be made publicly available in due course.
